Touchy subject of would-rather-not proportions: threats made against the 44th American President. There are fine lines between free-speech and danger. The New York Times reports on the people who draw them seeing an early spike, but still being strong concerns.

Of course, when your job is to protect the President of the United States, and the first black one at that, it goes without saying, but "strong concern" is the default position. Early on, however, it was really, really bad: one such threat resembles most of them, and take a guess what kind it was. Ready? Yeah: White, former Marine, even had a name for it. "Operation: Patriot." Scary, much?

The Marine, Kody Brittingham, a 20-year-old lance corporal, wrote that he had taken an oath to "protect against all enemies, both foreign and domestic." In a signed "letter of intent," tucked away in his barracks at Camp Lejeune, he identified a "domestic enemy" he planned to eliminate last winter: President Obama.

A notorious white supremacist from South Africa's apartheid era has revealed plans to rally far right groups and apply to the United Nations for a breakaway Afrikaner republic.

Eugene Terre'Blanche was the voice of hardline opposition to the end of white minority rule in the early 90s, but has been in relative obscurity since his release in 2004 after a prison sentence for beating a black man nearly to death.

He said today that he had revived his Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB) after several years of inactivity and it would meet with like-minded groups on 10 October to discuss joining forces and pushing for secession from South Africa.

"The circumstances in the country demanded it," he told South Africa's Mail and Guardian newspaper. "The white man in South Africa is realising that his salvation lies in self-government in territories paid for by his ancestors."

A diplomatic row erupted last month when Brandon Huntley, a white South African, was granted refugee status by Canada after claiming he had been attacked because of his race.

Terre'Blanche said he wanted to organise a referendum for those wanting an independent homeland, where English would be an accepted language along with Afrikaans. "It's now about the right of a nation that wants to separate itself from a unity state filled with crime, death, murder, rape, lies and fraud."

Terre'Blanche said taking up arms was not part of the new far-right plan. "For now there are other options we have to exercise first. We have a strong case to take to the United Nations."

The AWB – whose flag resembles a Nazi swastika – was founded in 1973 with the aim of maintaining white supremacy by any means.

White rightwing activity in South Africa faded after the end of apartheid, helped in part by Terre'Blanche's imprisonment in 2001 for the attempted murder of a security guard and assault on a petrol attendant in 1997.

Political analysts say white extremists have little support, but more than 21 members of the shadowy Boeremag (Boer Force) remain on trial for treason after being arrested in 2001 and accused of a bombing campaign aimed at overthrowing the government.

Before South Africa's first all-race elections in 1994, the AWB deployed thousands of armed white rightists in Bophuthatswana, a puppet black "homeland" under apartheid, in an abortive attempt to prevent the overthrow of its president. The AWB was humiliated and forced to pull out.

In 1998, Terre'Blanche accepted "political and moral responsibility" before South Africa's truth and reconciliation commission for a bombing campaign to disrupt the 1994 elections in which 21 people were killed and hundreds injured.

Jacob Zuma, who took office as president in May, has courted Afrikaners at a series of meetings this year, assuring them they have nothing to fear from his government.

The African National Congress said it was unconcerned by Terre'Blanche's plans. "It's singing an old song that will not work," said Ishmael Mnisi, a spokesman. "There is no way we are going back to the era of apartheid where particular ethnic groups declare their own independence.

"South Africa is a democratic country. People have a right to raise issues as long as they're within the constitution."

Allister Sparks, a journalist and political analyst, said: "Eugene Terre'Blanche is a discredited figure who has spent time in prison. There will probably always be a small number of rightwing sympathisers, but the ANC has taken a benign attitude.

FRIDAY, Oct. 2 (HealthDay News) -- Black males may be at increased risk for heart problems caused by accumulation of dental plaque, a U.S. study finds.

Indiana University School of Dentistry researchers studied 128 black and white women and men and found that a buildup of dental plaque didn't cause a change in total white blood cell count, a known risk factor for heart problems. However, dental plaque accumulation in black males was associated with a significant increase in the activity of white blood cells called neutrophils, an important part of the immune system, the researchers noted.

None of the study participants had periodontal (gum) disease. They were healthy people who were asked to neglect their oral hygiene as part of the study, the study authors explained.

"We are talking about healthy people who simply neglect oral hygiene and if they were male and black, we found a response from their white blood cells, or neutrophils, that might be a cause for concern," study leader Michael Kowolik, a professor of periodontics and associate dean for graduate education at the school of dentistry, said in a university news release.

"If you get a bacterial infection anywhere in the body, billions of neutrophils come flooding out of your bone marrow to defend against the intruder. Our observation that with poor dental hygiene, white blood cell activity increased in black men but not black women or whites of either sex suggests both gender and racial differences in the inflammatory response to dental plaque. This finding could help us identify individuals at greater risk for infections anywhere in the body including those affecting the heart," Kowolik said.

An elevated white blood cell count is one of the major risks for heart attack, previous research has found.

"While we did not observe higher white blood cell counts as the result of dental plaque accumulation, the increased activity of white blood cells, which we did find, may also carry a higher risk for heart disease," Kowolik said.

The study was published in the August issue of the Journal of Dental Research.

Update 12:12 am (eastern): WSBTV is NOW confirming the news surrounding AJ’s death. They are saying that he was stabbed.

I just received word that AJ, who was Kandi’s (RHOA) finance, was beat to death in a brawl at Body Tap Exclusive in Atlanta. My sources state that AJ was a promoter partial owner of the strip club and was hit in the head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he passed away from his injuries. People who are currently inside the club are texting FROM the club but no additional information is available.

He was even a producer, crafting joints for acts like the Force MDs. Global Grind - Top 50 LATINOS In Hip Hop Levantate!!!

They say less is more. I say, it depends in what context you’re speaking. Sometimes I wonder if there are enough Latinos in the Hip Hop genre. But then again, its not the quantity but the quality. Latinos have contributed so many things to the Hip Hop community.

This blog may be slightly biased being that I was slightly raised by Latinos while I was growing up. I lived on 183rd street in Jamaica Queens. There were Columbians, Dominicans and Puerto Ricans who pretty much owned that section of Jamaica at the time. Everything was in Span-glish catering to all the diverse ethnic groups. We had the deli and the bodega, the church and the Iglesia, the banks and the prestamista (loan shark). All though at times it seemed as Latinos had their own thing going on in the neighborhood, everyone seemed to embrace their lifestyle and culture.

Not only have they taken music to the next level with reggaeton but they've also added flair to fashion, sports, broadcasting (radio and tv), music and video production, film, comedy, poetry, and even graffiti. And lets not forget about the food. Who's not a fan of chicken rice and beans for $5?? They pile on the food like there's no tomorrow. And for you ladies, dont forget about the hair salons that kept your hair straight. I see you creeping on Saturday mornings.

All of these contributions have helped Latinos edge their name in stone in Hip Hop culture. In respect to that, I've decided to make a list of the top 50 Latin people who have influenced me in Hip Hop. Please note, I said Hip Hop culture, not just credited Latinos. I know there are much more Latinos who've done great things, but I'm only talking about those who are synonymous with Hip Hop culture. BEIJING – CHINESE doctors were shocked when they discovered a one-year-old girl was carrying a baby in her stomach.

According to media outlets on Wednesday, Kang Mengru, 1, worried her parents and doctors after her belly became grossly enlarged.

After a CT scan was done, the doctors were amazed to discover a fetus inside the little girl’s stomach.

The fetus is believed to be Mengru’s parasitic twin, the result of one twin embryo not fully separating from the other.

Mengru has been hospitalized and is waiting for an operation to have the fetus removed.

Caster Semenya has gone into hiding. Scared, sad and devastated at leaked reports that she is a hermaphrodite - with the outward organs of a woman, but undeveloped internal testes instead of ovaries and a womb - there are serious concerns for her mental and emotional state.

Some fear she might take her own life.

On Friday, the chairman of Parliament's portfolio committee on sport and recreation, Butana Komphela, told the Saturday Star that the elite athlete was being closely watched so that no harm came to her.

"She is like a raped person. She is afraid of herself and does not want anyone near her. She has been placed on an altar for all the world to see. If she commits suicide, it will be on all our heads."

Komphela said the teenager's emotional well-being was their top priority, and everyone around her was there to support her.

"I spoke to her today. She says she is okay. But I can hear that she is disguising a lot of agony.

"She is traumatised by all of this. The best we can do is protect her and look out for her during this trying time," Komphela said.

An Australian newspaper broke the sensational global story this week of how International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) tests showed that Semenya, who won the 800m gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin last month, is a hermaphrodite, or intersexed.

The journalist who broke the story, Mike Hurst, told the Saturday Star he had made reliable contacts at the IAAF as he had been an athletics coach for 21 years.

"I am well connected and the information was leaked to me. It wasn't easy for me to write the story, but the information fell into my lap and I had to."

Later he said he felt vindicated even though the IAAF had not commented on his article.

"They haven't denied my story, and I think that's crucial," Hurst added.

Athletics SA's former national athletics coach, Wilfred Daniels, who quit amid the gender saga, said he had spoken to Caster two days ago.

"Her mental state at this time cannot be good at all. Media reports on Caster over the past few weeks have been absolutely appalling, and it has really affected her."

But despite the Polokwane teenager's trauma of recent weeks, Athletics SA (ASA) seems determined to make money out of her.

Three weeks ago, ASA boss Leonard Chuene vowed to protect Semenya. On Friday, he defended the association's decision to sell her story exclusively to YOU magazine for an undisclosed sum - subjecting her to more ridicule.

The interview and makeover featured Semenya in dresses, hair extensions, high heels and make-up.

On Friday, Chuene told the Saturday Star that they would soon start accepting bids for a management team for her.

He said the ASA was protecting her as a brand.

All you weed heads are going to love this … Fox News is reporting … You’ve heard about using marijuana and drugs derived from it to keep some of the side effects of toxic cancer chemotherapy in check. But what if smoking marijuana for 10 to 20 years could actually protect against certain tumors?

In a study, researchers have found that long-term pot smokers were roughly 62 percent less likely to develop head and neck cancers than people who did not smoke pot.The new study featured 434 patients with head and neck cancers, which include tumors in the mouth, tongue, nose, sinuses, throat and lymph nodes in the neck, and 547 individuals without these cancers seen in the Greater Boston area from December 1999 to December 2003.

After factoring out the impact of smoking, drinking, and other factors that might influence the results, smoking marijuana from once every two weeks to three times every two weeks, on average, was associated with about half the risk of head and neck cancer, compared with less frequent use. Those who took up pot smoking at an older age appeared to have less risk of these cancers than those who started it at a younger age.

Compared to people who never smoked pot, those who began smoking marijuana between the ages of 15 and 19 years were 47 percent less likely to develop head and neck cancer, while users who began at age 20 or older had a 61 percent reduced risk, Kelsey and colleagues found. It’s unclear why marijuana would prevent cancer, if in fact the study is borne out by others, but the authors note that chemicals in pot called cannabinoids have been shown to have potential antitumor effects. Other studies have linked marijuana use to a reduced risk of some cancers, such as cancer of the prostate, and now head and neck cancer.

Just hours after court documents were unsealed indicating that Michael Jackson had lethal levels of the drug propofol in his system, an unnamed law-enforcement official reportedly told that Jackson’s death has been ruled a homicide by the Los Angeles County coroner.

The coroner determined a fatal combination of drugs was given to Jackson hours before he died on June 25, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the findings have not been publicly released, the AP reported. Forensic tests indicated that propofol acted with at least two sedatives to cause Jackson’s death, according to the official.

The court documents unsealed on Monday indicated that Jackson’s private physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, informed investigators he administered 25 milligrams of propofol to Jackson at 10:40 a.m. as the singer struggled to fall asleep after previously giving him the sedatives lorazepam and midazolam.

Murphy is currently under a manslaughter investigation by the LAPD, and the AP reported that Monday’s information is likely to increase the chances that criminal charges will be filed against Murray. [source]

Bernard Simmons had started “yelling and cursing” at his family for using a childhood nickname just minutes after he was reunited with them after eight years in prison and told his mother he was “God” and stated “death to non-believers” before killing both her and his father over the weekend, Cook County prosecutors said today.

Police discovered the bodies of 70-year-old Bernard Smith and Geraldine Simmons, 63, in the couple’s basement in the 10000 block of South Eberhart on Saturday. Bernard Simmons, 29, was allowed to stay at his parent’s home while he remained on parole.

Lawrence "Lonnie" Powell, 58, a semiskilled laborer at the city's Northwest Transfer Station, in Roxborough, said that since he began working at the trash-handling plant in 2003 he has had to seek the superintendent's permission to go to the bathroom — then descend five flights of stairs to use it.



Powell, who is black, said that white employees have been permitted to use a bathroom just 25 feet from his work station.



"On several occasions I've actually defecated on myself, trying to get down to the bathroom," said Powell, who operates a machine that packs trash into tractor-trailers to be taken to landfills.



Powell is one of five current and former employees, all in their 50s, who allege, in legal documents and interviews with the Daily News, that the station's white superintendent has discriminated against them because they are black.

“These internet sites in general are a proven haven for malicious actors and content and are particularly high risk due to information exposure, user generated content and targeting by adversaries,” reads a Marine Corps order, issued Monday. “The very nature of SNS [social network sites] creates a larger attack and exploitation window, exposes unnecessary information to adversaries and provides an easy conduit for information leakage that puts OPSEC [operational security], COMSEC [communications security], [and] personnel… at an elevated risk of compromise.”

The Marines’ ban will last a year. It was drawn up in response to a late July warning from U.S. Strategic Command, which told the rest of the military it was considering a Defense Department-wide ban on the Web 2.0 sites, due to network security concerns. Scams, worms, and Trojans often spread unchecked throughout social media sites, passed along from one online friend to the next. “The mechanisms for social networking were never designed for security and filtering. They make it way too easy for people with bad intentions to push malicious code to unsuspecting users,” a Stratcom source told Danger Room.

The Senate is ready to vote Thursday to confirm President Barack Obama's high court nominee, a 55-year-old appeals court judge of Puerto Rican descent who was raised in a New York City housing project, educated in the Ivy League and served 17 years on the federal bench.

Sotomayor picked up more GOP support Wednesday even as nearly three-quarters of the Senate's 40 Republicans said they would vote "no" and contended she would bring liberal bias and personal sympathies to her decisions. With all Democrats expected to back her, she has more than enough votes to be confirmed, barring a surprise turn of events, in one of the Senate's last actions before it breaks for the summer.

Democrats, praising her as a well-qualified judge and a mainstream moderate, are warning Republicans that they risk a backlash from Hispanic voters ? a growing part of the electorate ? if they oppose her. But Republicans bristle at the suggestion, noting that Democrats used extraordinary measures several years ago to block the confirmation of GOP-nominated Miguel Estrada, a Honduran-born attorney, to the federal bench.

GOP senators say their opposition to Sotomayor is based on her speeches and record, pointing to a few rulings in which they argue she showed disregard for gun rights, property rights and job discrimination claims by white employees. They also cite comments she's made about the role that a judge's background and perspective can play, especially a 2001 speech in which she said she hoped a "wise Latina" would usually make better decisions than a white man.

This is just another example that you don't have to go to the mainstream to find a gem. DECATUR, Ga. -- The DeKalb County police department is investigating two officers who have been accused of running a criminal background check on President Barack Obama.

County public safety director William Miller said in a prepared statement Wednesday that the officers have been put on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The officers' names were not released.

Miller said the police department was notified by the U.S. Secret Service that DeKalb County computers were used to run a query on Obama. He did not say what investigators believe was the officers' motive.

Members of a prominent Chicago-based sorority are suing to oust their national president -- former Chicago Housing Authority comptroller Barbara McKinzie -- saying she misappropriated funds and commissioned a $900,000 wax figure of herself.

She also is accused of taking nearly $400,000 for personal expenses and arranging for a $4,000 monthly stipend to be paid to herself after she leaves office.

Interest wanes after considering whole ball of wax

McKinzie, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and its current and some former board of directors members are targeted in a lawsuit filed by eight sorority members last month.

Among the allegations:

• • AKA directors violated the group's rules when they approved a four-year "pension stipend" for a total of nearly $192,000. They also purchased a $1 million life insurance policy for McKinzie.

• • McKinzie used the group's American Express card to buy designer clothing, lingerie and jewelry, then redeemed points racked up on the card to get a 46-inch HDTV, gym equipment and other items for personal use.

• • The president started a campaign to raise $100 million for an endowment fund to be run by her management firm -- BMC Associates.

McKinzie denied any wrongdoing Tuesday, saying the lawsuit was backlash to "enforced stringent financial standards as part of a professionalization of our organization."

"Change never comes easy," she said. "The malicious allegations leveled against AKA by former leaders are based on mischaracterizations and fabrications not befitting our ideals of sisterhood, ethics and service."

McKinzie's likeness, along with one of the first national AKA president Nellie Quander, cost a total of $45,000, she said. All other figures are of group founders or first national presidents. The $900,000 "was allocated by the AKA board of directors to help defray overall expenses for our 2010 convention,' McKinzie said.

The wax figure of McKinzie is being prepped at the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum in Baltimore, where it will be in a growing exhibit of predominantly black fraternity and sorority representatives.
Parks, King, Keys, Donda West members

Founded at Howard University, AKA is the oldest predominantly black Greek-lettered sorority.

Members have included civil rights icons Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King; former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt; musician Alicia Keys; astronaut Mae Jemison; poet Maya Angelou; actresses Jada Pinkett Smith and Roxie Roker; singer Gladys Knight; TV personality Star Jones; educator Marva Collins, and Kanye West's late mother, Donda West. Michelle Obama accepted honorary membership in 2008 but has yet to be inducted.

Mattel Inc. created the limited-edition AKA Centennial Barbie, the first Barbie based on any sorority.

The suit also alleges that McKinzie persuaded the board in 2008 to approve $250,000 -- later increased to about $375,000 -- in compensation to her for services rendered on behalf of the sorority. McKinzie's pay was based on her securing $1.6 million in cost savings to AKA, but there was no proof that there were any savings, the members said.

The suit contends the expenditures should have been approved by AKA members last year. It seeks to have the board removed and money returned.

Leadership also is accused of overcharging for the group's 2008 conference, one that observed Alpha Kappa Alpha's 100th anniversary.

The registration fee was doubled to about $500 per member for the 2008 meeting, which brought in about $13 million. The complainants say expenses for that gathering were about $9 million, and the surplus was spent at McKinzie's discretion.

The dispute is being played out on open-access Web sites and blogs, a rarity among the black heritage fraternities and sororities that typically value handling internal discord more discreetly.

In another dispute, members of Illinois-incorporated Zeta Phi Beta Sorority are contesting the 2008 election of comedian Sheryl Underwood as national president. A D.C. Superior Court dismissed a lawsuit seeking to unseat Underwood.
The ABCs of AKA

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. has initiated more than 260,000 members since its 1908 founding at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

About 50,000 members are active in the group’s 950 chapters worldwide.

At its 2008 centennial celebration in Washington, D.C., AKA set a Guinness record for the largest sit-down dinner, drawing about 20,000 guests.

Mattel Inc. created the limited-edition Alpha Kappa Alpha Centennial Barbie, the first Barbie based on any sorority.

The group settled a $100 million wrongful death lawsuit after the 2002 deaths of two California college students who drowned in the Pacific Ocean while attempting to pledge the sorority.

The group has offices at 5656 S. Stony Island Ave., and is incorporated in D.C. Its educational foundation, also being sued, is incorporated in Illinois.

Dues from active members range from $70 to $200 per year, and along with meeting registrations are the primary revenue source for the group’s operations.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — A Jamaican disciplinary committee will hold the first hearing for the five track athletes caught up in doping scandal on Friday or Saturday.

Chairman Kent Gammon said he wants the athletes to explain their side of the story before Monday's deadline to set the team for the upcoming world championships in Berlin.

The nine-member committee, part of the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission, can issue bans for the five athletes, who tested positive for a banned substance at June's national championships.

Jamaican officials and track's governing body have not identified the athletes or the drug. However, the manager for Sheri-Ann Brooks has confirmed she is involved in the scandal, as has runner Allodin Fothergill. Lansford Spence is also involved, according to his coach Henry Rolle.

Yet another twist in the investigation into the murder of Seaman August Provost. The Navy now admits the petty officer charged with murdering the Camp Pendleton sailor who committed suicide over the weekend ... was on suicide watch, reports the Associated Press.

Jonathan Campos was under video surveillance because he'd made two previous suicide attempts. [He] was on suicide watch when he apparently stuffed toilet paper in his mouth and suffocated Friday.

Pendleton spokeswoman Maj. Kristen Lasica-Khaner said Monday that a guard visually checked Campos every five minutes as Navy regulations require. However, there may have been a 36-minute gap between physical inspections. The base is investigating.

On Sunday, the Navy maintained it will continue investigating the homicide even after the suspect's suicide. Now the reasons become more obvious.

Twenty-nine-year-old Seaman August Provost of Houston, who gay and out to family and some coworkers, was gunned down in a Pendleton guard shack on June 30. The shack also was set on fire. Provost told his family he was harassed and ostracized at Pendleton for at least a year because he was gay and black. The Navy says there is "no evidence" of a hate crime.

Campos was accused of a month-long crime spree that included murder, solicitation off murder, drugs and weapons violations, and breaking and entering.

If the suspect in a drug- and alcohol-fueled crime spree was in on "video surveillance" and "suicide watch", how exactly was he allowed to kill himself? Why were there gaps in the "surveillance"? And how was one man able to allegedly storm a United States military installation? Perhaps Jonathan Campos' suicide was very convenient, because we may never learn what really happened that night at Guard Shack 3.

When rapper Method Man’s Lincoln Navigator was recently repossessed due to his tremendous amount of back taxes most people assumed the rapper wasn’t doing so well financially.
Why did Method Man forget to pay his taxes? Because he was "too high."

But according to The Daily News, Method Man could have easily written a check to clear up his back taxes but was too high to do so.

In an interview with The Daily News Method Man revealed that when the tax department was sending him letters he was on the road and simply forgot to pay them.

“Myself, I’m a pothead. It’s no secret. Everyone knows that,” Method Man told The Daily News. “I go on the road and forget everything else. Sure, [the tax department] sent letters to my house saying, ‘We need this money.’ They started sending them in 2002. Here it is, 2009, and I never paid this s— because I don’t think like that! I could have easily just written them a check for whatever amount, but no — I waited until they knocked on this door and were like, ‘We got your truck and we outta here,’ ”

Method Man owed the Department of Taxation a staggering $52,503 in overdue payments.

And when the Department of Taxation did seize Method Man’s Navigator he was too caught off guard to be bothered by the possession.

“I knew why they were there,” Method Man explained to The Daily News. “It wasn’t like ‘Oh my God! Noo!! Don’t take it!’ like it is on that TV show [“Operation Repo”]. I was half-dressed, and it was so early that I just said, ‘Okay, you’re taking the truck. ... Aight.’”
