Black men in raised prostate risk

BBC NEWS | Health | Black men in raised prostate risk
Black men living in England have a three times higher risk of prostate cancer than white men, figures show.

They also tend to be diagnosed five years younger, a study of all cases in London and Bristol found.

The results cannot be explained by access to diagnostic tests, awareness of the condition or screening, the British Journal of Cancer reported.

Cancer charities said the finding may lead to better care for men at higher risk of the disease.

Researchers at the University of Bristol said the US had already reported a higher rate of prostate cancer in black men.

There's very few known risk factors for prostate cancer but it's starting to look like being of black race is a risk factor
Dr Chris Metcalfe

In the UK study, it was initially unclear whether there was a "genuinely" higher rate of prostate cancer in these groups or whether they were more likely to be diagnosed.

But when they looked in detail at hospital records they found black and white men had similar levels of knowledge about prostate cancer, similar symptoms and similar delays before they went to their GP.

However, there was some evidence that black men were more likely to have had a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test before they had any symptoms.

Susceptibility

On why black men could be being diagnosed earlier, the researchers said prostate cancer at a younger age was more likely to be due to greater biological susceptibility to the disease.

The researchers are now doing further work to see if there are any differences in survival between the two groups.

Studies looking at whether PSA should be used as a routine screening test are also being done and it may be that it is recommended for some high risk groups but not everyone.

Study leader Dr Chris Metcalfe said this was the first evidence from the UK on differences between black and white men in rates of prostate cancer.

"One of the possibilities based on anecdote was that black men may delay presentation - so the cancer gets to a later stage.

"If anything the evidence showed black men were presenting sooner."

He added: "There's very few known risk factors for prostate cancer but it's starting to look like being of black race is a risk factor."

Dr Joanna Peak, science information officer at Cancer Research UK, said prostate cancer was the most common cancer in UK men.

"The study indicates that there is a true biological difference between ethnic groups and this knowledge could potentially lead to improved care for men at higher risk of developing prostate cancer."

Anna Jewell, from The Prostate Cancer Charity, said: "We would encourage all men to visit their GP if they are experiencing any possible symptoms of prostate cancer such as problems when urinating.

"This strongly demonstrates the need for continuing work to raise awareness of the higher risk of prostate cancer in black men.

"We would like to see further research investigating whether there are any differences in access to treatment or care for prostate cancer between black and white men to help us understand how we can meet the needs of those most at risk from the disease."

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Tuesday to send Judge Sonya Sotomayor's Supreme Court nomination to the full Senate, moving her one step closer to becoming the first Hispanic on the highest court in the land.

The 13-6 vote was mostly along party lines. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina was the lone Republican to support Sotomayor, voting with all 12 Democrats to push President Obama's first Supreme Court nominee forward.

The full Senate is expected to vote on Sotomayor's nomination next week, and confirmation is virtually certain.

In comments before the vote, Graham said, "I'm deciding to vote for a woman I would not have chosen." He added that Obama's choice to nominate the first-ever Latina to the highest court is "a big deal," declaring that "America has changed for the better with her selection."

Graham noted that Sotomayor would not change the court's ideological balance. If confirmed, she will replace retiring Justice David Souter, a liberal.

Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said Sotomayor's 17 years as a federal district and appellate judge make her well qualified to serve on the court.

"The president nominated a person with more federal judicial experience than anyone nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in nearly a hundred years," Leahy said, adding that Sotomayor would be the only justice with experience as a prosecutor. "It's with enthusiasm and hope that I'm going to vote in favor of this historic nomination."

But most committee Republicans questioned Sotomayor's ability to be unbiased, repeatedly criticizing her "wise Latina" comment during a 2001 speech before a law school audience at the University of California, Berkeley.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life," she said in the speech.

The statement became a major issue in confirmation hearings. Sotomayor testified that it was merely rhetoric that fell flat, but Republicans say her words showed racial and gender bias.

Referring to the oft-quoted comment, Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa, the committee's second-ranking Republican, said he is not convinced that Sotomayor would be able to decide cases impartially.

Grassley said she has repeatedly made such statements. "I had problems harmonizing her answers with the statements that she repeated over and over again throughout the years," he said.

The committee's top Republican, Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, said the "wise Latina" comment leads him to believe she will be a judicial activist. He also raised concerns about her stance on gun rights.

As part of an appellate panel, Sotomayor ruled earlier this year that the Second Amendment could not be used to limit state laws restricting weapons possession. The case involved a man named James Maloney of Port Washington, N.Y., who was arrested for possessing a nunchaku martial arts weapon in his home. He contended that the Second Amendment rendered the state law banning nunchakus unconstitutional.

The case, Maloney v. Rice, could come before the Supreme Court.

The National Rifle Association announced last week that it would categorize Sotomayor as "hostile" to the Second Amendment and include lawmakers' votes on her confirmation in its rating of political candidates, which could influence voters in key battleground states.

Throughout the proceedings, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle commended Sotomayor for her accomplishments.

The 55-year-old jurist is the daughter of working-class, Puerto Rican immigrants. She graduated from Yale Law School and went on to have a broad-ranging legal career that included working as an assistant district attorney and in private practice.

Sotomayor is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate next week. Democrats, who hold 60 of the Senate's 100 seats, are solidly behind the president's nominee, and five Republicans — including two of the party's four female senators and Cuban-born Florida Sen. Mel Martinez — have said they'll vote for Sotomayor.

Crooked Cops Caught on Dash Cam Video

Police seen plotting to blame car accident on woman they hit

By TODD WRIGHT

Hollywood Police

A cop's dashboard camera is supposed to catch criminals in the act. For four Hollywood cops, the dash cam may have foiled their plans to frame a motorist.

The four police officers -- three of them longtime veterans of the force -- were caught on one of the cop's dash cameras plotting to place the blame for a February traffic accident on a woman one of them had hit with their patrol car. The disturbing video shows the woman, Alexandra Torrensvilas, handcuffed in the back of the squad car as the officers get their stories straight on what they are going to say happened.

Officer Joel Francisco, 36, an 11-year veteran, crashed into the back of Torrensvilas' vehicle at a light on February 17 at midnight. The cop radioed to other officers who converged on the scene and hatched a way to bail Francisco out.

Officer Dewey Pressley, 42, arrives and questions Torrensvilas, who tells him that she has been drinking. The 21-year veteran officer seizes the opportunity and arrests her for DUI. But the plot thickens from there.

Corrupt Cops on Display

The cops begin to brainstorm believable excuses for the accident.

"As far as I'm concerned. I'm going to put words in his mouth. She went to accelerate and a cat jumped out of the window at which point he thought it could have been a pedestrian, which distracted him," Pressley tells Sgt. Andrew Diaz, another veteran of the force. "I mean what's the chances of hitting a f---in drunk when a cat jumps out of the window?"

Still, the cops run with the half-baked idea and rush to get Torrensvilas to do a Breathalyzer test so they can officially say she was drunk.

"I nailed her on the video. I already hung her on video. She said she has been doing a beer party," Pressley says. "She's gonna blow."

Then, another cop debates with Pressley on who is going to write up the fabricated report to clear their police comrade.

"I know how I'm going to word this with the cat so we can get him off the hook. I'll write the narrative," Pressley says. "We're going to bend this a little bit."

Civilian Community Service Officer Karim Thomas joins the three senior officers and the four cops go so far as to change the angle of pictures of the accident to make it look like Torrensvilas swerved in front of the cop car and caused the accident, not Francisco.

Throughout the tape, the cops acknowledged what they are doing is illegal, but when you are the law, there is nothing wrong with bending it for a fellow cop, one says.

"I don't lie and make things up ever because it's wrong, but if I need to bend it a little bit to protect a cop, I'll do it," Pressley tells Francisco after reassuring him no one will ever find out. "She's freaking hammered anyway."

The cops even do a final rehearsal before Villa is taken to the city lock up.

"We'll take care of it," one officer says. The others reply: "We're good."

The police officers are currently on administrative leave pending a state attorney's office investigation. Torrensvilas, who was charged with four counts of DUI and cited for improper lane change, is still fighting the charges in court.

ALL AROUND SHAME

An 8-year-old girl was raped by four boys, ages 9-14. Then, she was placed in foster care because the parents don’t want her anymore. They claim she hasbrought shame to the family by allowing herself to be raped! This happened in Phoenix, AZ, but all parties are from Liberia originally.
